With all that happening since last 3 years or so, i feel light going into 2011. Recession seems to easing, done 60k with the car and satish confidence seem to be coming back. I don't know yet. Starting 2010, I thought I had left worries behind. But it was not to be as I found out in march. How lucky is 5 mate????

Getting things back on track. Had a British vacation. It was fabulous, first of life and hoping for more of similar. MAK loosened its wallet in happiness, a surprise for 2010.

2+0+1+1 - how will you be?

Donations, offerings and our apathy

The recent offering to Lord Venkateswara by one minister from Karanataka had created news and there is resentment against this act of faith in the blogging world. As I discover spirituality myself and the importance of places of worship for a living society, I'm saddened by this one act of selfishness/devotion. I'm certainly not campaigning against donations/offerings to places of worship or our acts of faith; but the above said offering is financially too huge to be accepted.
For the perspective on the hugeness of the amount involved, look at the following calculation from which it is evident that the money is sufficient enough to feed 1000 people for their lifetime.

A 420,000,000 total amount
B 420,000,000 / 20 = 21,000,000 total meals that could be bought @ 20 rs. per day
C 21,000,000 / 1000 = 21,000 total days assuming 1000 people
D 60 * 395 = 21, 900 number of days in a persons life span

This amount can build 10 kilometers of 4 laned highway and similarly numerous other things. I remember my college days when our dean advised us to be
agents of change. I appreciate that statement more now than at any other time in the past. If we are in a position and have the ability to effect change for the good, we should give it a shot. Mr. Minister with 42 crores was one such agent and it is a lost opportunity now.

I do appreciate that this is a sensitive subject. I personally donate/offer during my visits to places of worship and it gives me immense satisfaction as well. We should always distinguish between being responsible or being excessive. We can of course endlessly debate on the exact line that differentiates responsibility and excessiveness. Are we not matured enough to get into such a debate? We can clearly see it.

the indomitable fan !!!!!

Summer reminds of the fans. It’s 4 years since I moved in to UAE and the same time since I said good bye to fans.

A fan is a device which employs hub-mounted rotating paddles to circulate air in order to produce a cooling or destratification effect; so says wikipedia about a fan. It also tells me that fan was invented in 19th century in USA, say around 1870. In India we have been using our own ingenious ways of relieving us from heat (I sure want to list them), long before motorized fans invaded our living and bed rooms. We talk of air conditioning nowadays and not about destratification or cooling by circulation.

I’m fascinated by fan now, more so since I bought a fan myself. It’s after our central aircon fan gave away from cooling the house for the fabulous Arabian summer! We couldn’t survive one night without any sort of air circulation! We debated, argued and confused ourselves with the decision and finally bought a table fan.

Off late fan has become obsolete and I could not find any variety at the store since no one buys them any more. I was doubtful about it’s utility initially, but nonetheless bought it. I’m amazed at the relief that ‘directional air’ gives us in summer

purification by priests etc.......

"Priests 'purify' temple after foreigner enters premises"

The above article in times of india prompted me to write this. I'm surprised at our attitude towards this kind of incidents. I have often wondered as to why this is still being followed. Initially there were some talk of allowing non- hindus entry into temples in Kerala. But all of that seemed to have died out after some time.

Interestingly I see a lot of bloggers address this issues at various times. I believe that this practise need to be abolished as we progress as a religion and way of living.

It's been a year and a half since DPIAD started. There was this anniversary get together and many more during the last six months.

Although i participate lesser in the events because of geographical and time constraints, I do watch the episodes unfolding. Why am'i ever interested in writing about this at all? Well for one it brought some thing exciting to my dull life in abu dhabi and other is that i'm keen about it from a social point of view. How groups are formed? What is their dynamics? How sustainable are they? Although i'm not doing a scientific study, I would like to bring out my observations in a discernable fashion. It has been interesting. New faces have come in and old faces have moved out. But majority of them stayed back. Well for one the group in its thought and outlook would never have been able to attract glamour, but it seems to be sustainable. One of the questions that often raise in my mind is that does this social circles need to be sustainable at all. There are similar groups which are sustainable like the India Cultural Assosciation, but are they this close in terms of interaction, camaraderie, bonding et all.....

i saw a thousand heaven, a thousand in her eyes
they came searching, searching with a sweet smile
beautiful; beautiful as morning in spring.
crinkled with pleasure, inquisitive, warm;
an assurance they had
alleys of fear; in the labrynth of life
i ran, ran alone
through that wilderness
faces so strange; with apathy too,
they made themselves more so strange.

the eyes searched, kept calling, searched with an assurance.
i masked, masked with unawareness.
i evaded.
easy though, those were compelling.
compelled, i ran .
separated by distance.
distance of fear,
fear of losing.

winds blowed past,
seemingly unaware of my presence.
they danced, danced to the joy of change
changing time, changing season; they gave me good company
My thoughts danced with joy to the tune of blowing winds
they blowed with an assurance, assurance of change
it seems to be perservant, change, change and only change
monotony has blunt; blunt my imagery
my whole self
a portfolio of contradictions, waywardness, dilemma, surreal
they prop up, diluting yourselves
beacons flashed at a distance, may i seek
maybe or is it a delusion
